Hildiah Martin Suggs! I’m so proud of you for continuing to keep our children out of the system.
You won’t see a Disney movie depicting a man like me. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie that appropriately shows men like me. But what matters is that our children see us.
At 5, she’s got more biblical knowledge than I had at 30.
She knows just as much about our past as I do.
And it tears me up sometimes to hear her thank God for “my beautiful Black skin.”
I didn’t teach her that, by the way. I just held up a mirror, and she embraced her reflection.
Her teachers told me, “She’s advanced.” I saw she was a sponge and allowed her to soak up the truth. I want her to be confident in who she is as a whole person.
Showing a man like me on TV is bad for business. Can you imagine if young Black boys saw themselves as entrepreneurs and investors instead of athletes and entertainers? I’m not knocking them. I know we are meant for more.
I’m a rose that grew from concrete, and I’m giving these flowers to my little girl.
